Mid-Vegas Update

Hi All!

Though I wasn’t planning to do a poker update till the end of the vacation, I had a long crazy session today and wanted to note down some hands for reference. In summary it’s been a really fantastic 2 days! Not only did I get on the guest list to a police cover band at the hard rock, but I made a load of cash as well as losing some huge pots. Whys that great you may ask yourself? Well, poker players will lose hands. Its as simple as that. We’ll get great all in as a huge favourite and lose.. a lot. The important thing is to make money from the times you can and make sure that’s ahead of your losses. Rather than the past 2 days being a load of “luck”, I’ve lost some big hands but minimised damage and really value betted weak hands against weak opponents where I could exploit them. This is where the money comes from in Vegas cash games, so I’m pretty darn happy so far. To summarise, I’m $530 up so far after about 14 hours of poker in 2 days.

——————GENERAL (NONE POKER)————————

I’ve saved the deep poker analysis for the end of this blog so all you none poker readers can see what I’m up to 🙂

Tomorrow (or Today as it’s 4:44am) brings a lot of fun. Will be seeing HIM again (but not taking any phones…) as well as an evening of poker, then on Monday I’m spending the day at the pool in Hard Rock with a friend who lives in town, before playing more in the evening. Happy to be meeting people around here as I’m going to be back a whole load more… The dealers are getting to know my name too which is pretty fun, though I’m not sure about Jen thinking I was gay due to my lack of flirting..! Pfft – I was working damnit!

Also got the news I’m having to cut my holiday short a day to fly to LA to visit some clients. I was a bit meh at first, but it’s cool. A week is enough for now and I want to get out and see clients as much as possible while I’m here so looking forward to it. Hopefully it won’t rain this time…

——————POKER ANALYSIS————————

Anyway back to the poker!

So a couple of the bad hands included a weak top pair with on a flop. I’m first to act on the flop after he called my $12 raise pre flop from the blinds, so I do a standard bet of $20 which he thinks about and raises to $50. Now I know he’s capable of doing this with nothing and we’d run into each other a few times. His range included nearly all weaker aces and even most tens here! I’m either all in or folding but he has $120 behind so I figure I’ll let him make another play on the turn. I call and the turn is – I check, he goes all in.. thus I call knowing I was ahead on the flop. Unfortunately he had to make 2 pair – The only thing I could have done differently is 1) fold the flop or 2) push the flop. I’m not sure I like the fold as his range for the raise is very big, which leaves pushing the only other option… Saying that if it was any other turn card, I figure he still would have pushed so I’m happy with the play.

Against the same guy several hands earlier though there was a pretty standard cooler with his against my .. It’s always a tough one to see but it’s easy to play and easy to get over. These 2 hands cost me $350 alone.

On the good side of life, one of my best ever plays came from a stone cold bluff with – UTG who hardly ever plays a hand straddles to $4. 4 callers so I figure I have some value! I call, he makes it $15, and everyone also calls that! So the flop comes – UTG bets out a straight $35 which is the worst bet I’ve seen. He’s left himself with $100 but the pot was already $60, and with 5 people in the hand and as a player I respected and thought was very good, $35 is just so weak! I mean what could he have? A strong ace bets more and if he had a weak pair he’s just giving it away! It’s folded round to me on the button and with T high I just can’t fold… I can’t put him on a strong ace so figure him to be on a really bad hand… So I push in the $135 casually, he thinks for about 2.5 seconds and mucks.

Re-looking at the above I took a $100 pot there on a flop with ten high… No pair, no draws, NO showdown equity at all. This is where the difference is between the luck players and the skill ones, so I was pretty happy with my read!

The whole night was like that really… I was reading people spot on, but I took another huge hit when my on a ran into !!! My stack was going from between $200 and $700 way too much, but finished this particular session on $600 which I thought was pretty fair.

Anyway, guess I better get some sleep. Less than 3 weeks till I’m back in England and REALLY looking forward to seeing everyone 🙂 I expect to be hungover most days while I’m in England though if I do see everyone in the few weeks I’m there 😉

Update on Americaaa

So I’ve tried my best to keep in touch with all friends and family back from England, but of course it can be quite hard with the time difference and everyone’s busy lives, so just wanted to give an update as to what’s going on and when I’ll be back to see you all! 🙂

May 13th is my flight back to England. I’ll be staying in Buckingham for the weekend (where we’ll be partying for my sisters engagement! Congrats to her!), and then leaving for Leeds on May 17th. While working from Leeds, I also have the much anticipated court case, where I’ll hopefully win lots of money and get that idiot back once and for all (it’s been nearly 2 years now!!!!!!!)

As for coming back to San Francisco, who knows. This depends on how long the trial is, how much work I have to do in Leeds, and how many people I can visit in the short amount of time 🙂 Currently it’s looking quite flexible so I may just decide on a day while I’m actually in England. I imagine it will be between early and mid June but it really could be anything.

In terms of looking into the future… Well, this is more uncertain than Leeds United’s promotion campaign right now! (Had to fit them in somewhere!). The company will support an L1 visa for me, which will allow me to stay for a between 2 and 7 years with a possible opportunity for a green card if I’m not married or something by then. I’m not thinking about this too much right now as I’m not even eligible to apply till at least July, and we’re going to start talking to immigration lawyers within the next month to get some probabilities and expectancies. There are other considerations (personal, but also ones out of my control such as for the business), so to summarise, I still have no idea where I’ll be living post the summer! *gulp*

Really looking forward to coming back and visiting you all though, and if I do end up staying out here, look forward to you all coming out and visiting me!!!!!!

In terms of other updates, I’m back in Vegas on the 22nd of April for 8 days this time. I really don’t expect to make as much profit as my 4 days there last time, but whatever happens it’s fantastic real life poker experience. Afterall, I’m bankrolled for NL200 so I’m giving it a proper go. If I do end up making on scale as much money, it will be one hell of a consideration to my future… I don’t think I ever want to be a full-time pro, but if I can make decent money from it then maybe a regular vacation going forward! To ALL those people who STILL believe Poker is pure luck, me just gambling my life away, and skill making no difference in long term profitability… well… all I can say is… *shock*. You need to open your eyes a little bit 😉

Music wise, I’m going to see HIM on Monday – Old school love metal emo band haha. Revisiting my youth a little I guess, but it will be pretty fun I imagine. After that, I can’t plan to go to any gigs anywhere as I have no idea where I’ll be!

I’ve been reading about election mania of course and watched the first political debate… Bit disappointed with Cameron but Lib Dem’s improved reputation will only hurt Labour thus still improving Tories chances I believe… I might find it hard to vote from over here but I certainly hope to convince some of you back home to make the right choice! Anyone reading this is likely somewhat technical, thus hopefully you’re aware of Labour’s digital economy bill? If not, in short it will punish people who own networks where filesharing occurs (regardless if they’re to blame or not), and it will push organised online crime (such as paedophilia) further underground… It’s a joke, with so many holes, yet Labour have rushed it through Parliament. Get them out!!!!!

As you may already know I was at the first ever Twitter developer conference, Chirp, this week… Absolutely incredible – Not only do they store and analyse 7TB of data a DAY, but a standard query to count the amount of tweets (currently 12 bil) takes only 5 minutes to return due to their current database handling techniques. Very impressive. The after party with free drinks and Will I Am was also quite incredible, not that I remember much of the end of the night…!

Anyway as long as the volcanic ash clears up I’ll see you all in a few weeks! If you want to follow me on twitter hover over @thejsug !

Vegas Summary – Viva Las Vegas!

I’ve now returned from my 5 day poker binge in Vegas so just thought I’d summarise the trip really! I’ll split it into 2 sections for the none poker geeks that are reading 🙂

Ok, there’s actually not that much here. The weather was hoooot, the hotel room was really nice (stayed at Tropicana), and generally it was a really good vacation and came away with a load of cash! What more can you ask for from a trip to Vegas? Also met a few semi-pro’s that live there, which is pretty awesome – Nice to have friends in places like that!

In terms of poker on a basic level, I had a pretty awful start to the holiday. The first 2 days saw me $400 down very quickly, but I made it all back plus a hell of a load more, so it worked out good in the end. Hopefully I’ll be revisiting in 3 to 4 weeks and building up that bankroll!

Ok now for the technical stuff! So let’s start with the first session I played – I sit with KcKs and a $200 stack.. Raise to $15 from early position with one caller, so the pot sitting at about $33 – rake. Flop,  Tc 5h 2c. Turn, 7c.

By this point the pot was big enough to justify the all in, so we got the chips in and he turns over QdQs meaning the only one card in the deck that will win it for him is the Qh as the Qc would give me a flush… He literally had a one outer and about a 2.5% chance. Yup, he hit. OUCH! So that was the start…

It turned around on the saturday though when I played KQ of hearts on a 952 board with 2 hearts. Checked to me in a 4 way pot which I’d raised to $15 pre flop. I put in a standard C-bet due to the amount of outs I had if I got called.. though I didn’t expect 2 calls and then an all in! It ended up around $170 for me to call a pot over $700… so I didn’t feel like I had a choice at this point as I figured any heart is good, with the K or Q making it possible too. Either way I called, so did one other guy, to show JJ and TT. Any KQ or heart and I win.. Hit the King and took down a pot over trippling my stack and putting me in the profit!

From then on it was up up up. Every session was a winning session ranging from $150 to $1000! On the sunday night session I even hit quad 6’s for a $150 high hand bonus which was nice to add! The final session though with the $1k profit is definitely my most memorable and best session ever. I didn’t actually get that many good hands, but when I did, I played them correctly and read other players correctly. Take my pocket kings again… A new guy to the table raises to $10, I re raise to $25 and he calls. The flop comes 345 – The caller checks to me (this is his 2nd hand at the table so I have no idea how he plays). I bet $30and he insta calls. The turn comes a 6. He checks to me again, I bet $60 and he raises all in….

So the flop shows 3456 thus any 2 or 7 makes a straight. Its a rainbow board so I don’t have to worry about the flush. The hands I’m worried about are AA, 77, 22, 66, 55 (maybe), possibly adding A2 and A7 as I’m not sure if he’s as passive as the normal fish in Vegas (who would call with A2 and A7) – There is also 78/67 that people tend to call with sometimes.

However, let’s take his play. He raises to $10 but then calls an extra $15. That takes away the 67/78/A2/A7 and maybe even pocket 2’s and 5’s. He could definitely have AA, but he would have taken the same line with 88,99,TT,JJ,QQ or AA, thus if I put him on an overpair I HAVE to call here.

So I think for ages, I put him on an overpair… said “I’m calling as I think you have 8’s”. I call, he shows pocket 8’s and I take a sweet $600 pot…. I do wonder if I had ten’s whether I would have made the same play though as then, if I put him of an overpair I sort of have to fold with that logic!

I took $600 of my roll to vegas and have come away with $2400 taking my total roll to a healthy level. I’m hoping to build it up and be playing the 5/10 games in a years time, as the buy in’s are only $500 thus only $15k required, which isn’t out of reach. Hopefully skill will prevail and I can keep building it up without taking too many hard hits!
Well, that’s all folks!
